6. Ancient Architecture Of Dong Ngac Village

The ancient architecture of Dong Ngac Doctoral Village is built in the style of traditional Vietnam. With works such as: communal houses, pagodas, temples, shrines, ancient houses, … These works are built with natural materials such as stone, wood, tiles, … It contains cultural and historical values ​​typical of Hanoi. Currently, this village still preserves about 100 ancient houses, of which the oldest house is about 400 years old. Dong Ngac communal house, also known as Ve communal house, is over 500 years old, built on a grand scale. This is a standard ancient architectural work of the 17th century. Although it has undergone many restorations and repairs, the communal house still retains many valuable relics and antiques. It is also a place to worship 3 gods representing Heaven – Earth – Human (the domination of nature, heaven and earth with humans).

7.2. Tu Khanh Pagoda with a strong historical imprint

Tu Khanh Pagoda (Ve Pagoda) belongs to the relic complex of Dong Ngac ancient village, a religious relic worshiping Buddha including 59 rooms. With two unique architectural styles: the inner temple in the shape of the letter “Dinh” and the outer temple in the shape of the letter “Quoc”. The pagoda not only has unique cultural, historical and artistic values ​​but also has great architectural value with many relics and antiques preserved intact to this day. This is also the only pagoda in Hanoi to be awarded the title “Toan Gia Resistance” during the resistance war against the French (1946 – 1954).

Currently, Tu Khanh Pagoda still preserves the bell from the reign of King Tran Minh Tong, Dai Khanh 2nd year (1315). Along with a large bell weighing up to 750kg from the Gia Long 16th year (1817) and 2 smaller bells from the Nguyen Dynasty.

7.3. Dong Ngac Temple

Dong Ngac Temple is a place to worship Confucius, the sages, scholars, and local honors. It consists of 2 buildings, each with 3 to 5 rooms designed with brick walls, gables, and tiled roofs. In general, the temple space consists of 3 layers:

  • The first layer worships the Saintly Teacher – Confucius.
  • The second layer is the place to worship those who passed the doctoral exam, and were mandarins from the third and fourth ranks and above.
  • The third layer is the sacrificial yard.

Saint’s Day at Dong Ngac Temple is held on the first day of the 2nd and 8th lunar months every year.

Phan family temple is located in hamlet 4A, Dong Ngac ward. The highlight of the temple is the statue of historian Phan Phu Tien – the first doctor of Dong Ngac village under King Le Thai To. The Phan family’s ancient church was built in the ancient architectural style of Dong Ngac village combined with the French art style, creating a beauty that is both ancient and modern.

The Do family’s church is considered the second communal house of Dong Ngac village, despite many years but still retains the intact architecture of 3 centuries ago. This is one of the rare family churches built like a communal house. The house consists of 2 parts: the front hall is designed with 5 compartments, two wings with a roof covered with yin-yang tiles and the sanctuary is made of ironwood, xoan, … creating a rare ancient look.

Although many centuries have passed, this place still preserves antiques and relics such as parallel sentences, horizontal lacquered boards, incense tables, palanquins, … Notable among them are the paintings “Thiet Thach Tinh Trung”, “Thuong Dang Phuc Than”, “Van Phuc Du Dong”, “Ngu Phuc Lam Mon”.
