6. The Story Of Kim Lien Communal House
Kim Lien communal house, also known as Cao Son temple, is a place to worship Cao Son Dai Vuong. According to legend, in the 16th century, when King Le Tuong Duc led the army to quell the rebellion and restore the career of King Le Thai To, three great ministers Nguyen Ba Lan, Nguyen Hoang Du and Nguyen Van Lu together led the army to conquer.
On the way to Phung Hoa district, now the Lao temple relic, Van Phuong commune, Nho Quan, Ninh Binh province. They were surprised to see an ancient temple with the four words “Cao Son Dai Vuong” engraved on it. The incident made the king and his mandarins very curious and surprised, so they prayed for the help of the gods. After that, the rebellion was successful after 10 days.
At that time, the king built a temple to worship Cao Son god in Phung Hoa. In 1509, the king rebuilt the temple to be more spacious and beautiful in Kim Hoa. Later, Kim Lien villagers added a three-door gate and some new architectures, creating the Kim Lien communal house as we see it today. Currently, Kim Lien communal house not only worships Cao Son Dai Vuong god but also worships the Mother Goddess, the Three Palaces and President Ho Chi Minh.

7.1 Unique architecture of the ancient Thang Long Four Temples
The ancient Thang Long Four Temples are 4 extremely sacred temples: Bach Ma Temple guarding the East, Voi Phuc Temple guarding the West, Kim Lien Temple guarding the South and Quan Thanh Temple guarding the North. The following is an explanation of Kim Lien Communal House.
Kim Lien Communal House was built on a high mound near Kim Lien lagoon. The communal house gate and main door both face the West. The architecture of the communal house consists of 2 main parts: the front part of the mound has a pillar gate and a row of stilts on both sides of the brickyard, the main architectural part is the entire construction of the communal house on the high mound. Going through the large yard are 9 high brick steps built with large bricks from the Le Trung Hung period.
The main communal house consists of 3 parts: Nghi Mon, Dai Bai and Cung Cam. Nghi Mon is a 3-compartment house built in the style of closed gable walls, the architecture and decorative motifs are vividly and elaborately expressed in the Nguyen Dynasty art style. The Dai Bai House has 5 rooms renovated with traditional architectural style. The Forbidden Palace is a 3-compartment house, the last room is the place to worship Cao Son Dai Vuong, the daughter of King Le, Princess Hue Minh.
7.2 Stone Stele – The oldest relic at Kim Lien Temple
The stone stele “Cao Son Dai Vuong Than Tu Bi Minh” composed by historian Le Tung in 1510, is the most important ancient relic at Kim Lien Temple. This stele tells about the merits of Cao Son god in helping King Le regain the throne. In addition, Kim Lien Temple also has 39 other royal decrees for Cao Son god, of which 26 are from the Le Trung Hung period, 13 are from the Nguyen period and the Vinh To 02 (1620) is considered a bright spot, dating the earliest.
7.3 Kim Lien Communal House Festival is bustling
Kim Lien Communal House Festival is held from the 15th to the 16th of the 3rd lunar month every year, and the 16th is the main festival day. In addition to the main festival, there are also monthly Soc Vong ceremonies, Ky An ceremonies and the anniversary of the god’s transformation on the 12th of the 8th lunar month every year.
- On the morning of March 15th: a hair cutting competition takes place, the atmosphere is jubilant and bustling throughout Kim Lien village. This village is also famous for its barbers who cut hair and dance with scissors as skillfully as artisans. The competition ends with folk games such as pot smashing, stick pushing, … in the evening, there is a very lively music and dance festival.
- The main festival day is March 16th: early in the morning, villagers will perform a ceremony in the main hall, reading the Kim Lien Communal House prayer. After that, they respectfully offer incense in front of the communal house yard, then the clans offer elaborate and stunningly beautiful trays of food. Finally, there is a procession with 4 solemn palanquins: Long Dinh, Mr. palanquin, Mrs. palanquin and hammock palanquin.
