1. Where is Dong Thap?

Dong Thap is a coastal province in the Mekong Delta region. With diverse terrain, stretching from the southwestern border of Vietnam to the southeastern coastal region. It is about 80 km southwest of Ho Chi Minh City. With geographical location:

• Bordering Tay Ninh province to the North.
• Bordering Ho Chi Minh City to the Northeast.
• It borders the East Sea to the Southeast.

2. How is Dong Thap unique?

Dong Thap stands out as the land of lotus – the symbolic flower and also the national flower of Vietnam. Not only famous for lotus, Dong Thap also possesses a unique geographical location as the only province located on both banks of the Tien River, bordering Cambodia with more than 50 km of border and 4 border gates, including 2 international border gates, Thuong Phuoc and Dinh Ba. In addition, Dong Thap also impresses with its ecological diversity, being the convergence of three typical ecological regions: alluvial freshwater ecology, mangrove ecosystem and Dong Thap Muoi wetland ecology. 3. When is the best time to visit Dong Thap?

Dong Thap has two distinct seasons: the dry season (from December to April) and the rainy season (from May to November). With a tropical monsoon climate, the average temperature during the year fluctuates around 27–28°C, with lots of sunshine, suitable for year-round travel. Even in the rainy season, travel experiences are not affected too much.

However, to explore Dong Thap in the most complete and unique way, you can consider the following times:

• Flower season (December – January): This is the time near Tet, when thousands of brilliant flowers bloom together. The famous flower villages in Dong Thap become extremely ideal check-in spots in the mild spring weather.
• Fruit season (June – August): This is the ideal time to visit the fruit-laden gardens, enjoy delicious fresh fruits such as mango, rambutan, longan, grapefruit, tangerine… The atmosphere of the West in the summer also becomes bustling and full of life.
• Flood season (July – October of the lunar calendar): This is a typical season of the river land. You will experience the lush green natural scenery, attractive specialties of the flood season and especially the lotus flowers blooming everywhere – the symbolic image of Dong Thap.

4. How to get to Dong Thap?

Dong Thap is located about 150–170km from Ho Chi Minh City and nearly 1,900km from Hanoi. With a convenient transportation system, so you can choose many different forms of transportation to get to this lotus land.

4.1 Traveling by plane

Currently, Dong Thap does not have its own airport. Therefore, if you depart from the Northern or Central provinces, you can book a flight to Can Tho airport or Tan Son Nhat airport (HCMC). From here, you continue to travel by bus or personal vehicle to Dong Thap.

Note: To hunt for cheap air tickets, you should book tickets 3–4 months in advance or regularly follow promotions on ticket booking platforms such as Traveloka.

4.2 Traveling by bus

This is the most popular and convenient option. You can buy bus tickets to Dong Thap at Mien Tay Bus Station (395 Kinh Duong Vuong, Binh Tan District, Ho Chi Minh City) or reputable bus company offices on Le Hong Phong Street.

Some high-quality bus companies that many people choose include: Phuong Trang, Mai Linh, Kim Cuong, Dong Phat, Phu Vinh,…

Ticket prices range from 100,000 – 200,000 VND, depending on the type of vehicle (seat, sleeper, limousine…). Travel time is about 3–4 hours.

4.3 Traveling by personal vehicle

If you love freedom and want to fully enjoy the beauty of the West on every route, traveling by motorbike or personal car is the ideal choice.

From the center of Ho Chi Minh City, you depart from An Lac roundabout (District 6) or Trung Luong highway (District 7) to reach National Highway 1A. From here, go straight to My Thuan bridge, meet the intersection with a sign to Dong Thap, turn right, go about 20km more to reach Lai Vung town. Continue to turn right at the large intersection and go about 25km more to reach Cao Lanh city – the center of Dong Thap.

Note: Before going, check the vehicle carefully, bring all documents to ensure a safe trip.

4.4 Means of transport in Dong Thap 

The roads in Dong Thap are quite flat and easy to travel. You can choose many means of transport such as taxi, motorbike, bus,boat. The boat will follow the route you choose, each means of transport will have different uses. For example:

• Tax: will help you move quickly to the tourist destination in Dong Thap that you want. However, the cost of travel will be quite expensive.
• Bus: cheap and easy to move to the location you want. But taking the bus will take a bit of time and the wait is quite long.
• Motorbike: if you have a motorbike from Ho Chi Minh or rent one, it will be easy to cross the roads in Dong Thap. Motorbikes also help you be more proactive with the time and route you want.
• Train/boat: it helps you move across canals and rivers to reach the famous islands in Dong Thap. Moreover, this is the means of transport you must use if you want to go to the islands.

5. Sightseeings in Dong Thap

5.1 Huynh Thuy Le Ancient House

Huynh Thuy Le Ancient House attracts many tourists because of its long history as well as the subtle blend of Eastern and Western architecture. When visiting Huynh Thuy Le Ancient House, you will be overwhelmed by the large space with an area of ​​over 258 square meters.

In addition, the house is built in the traditional three-room house style of the Vietnamese people. But it wears a coat of elaborately carved patterns, splendidly gilded with red paint, imbued with Chinese style. Mentioning Dong Thap, you cannot miss Sa Dec Flower Village – one of the largest ornamental flower villages in Vietnam. Located about 6km from the center of Sa Dec city, Sa Dec flower village is like a brilliant picture with the colors of hundreds of flowers competing to show off their bright colors.

Each season, Sa Dec flower village in Dong Thap puts on a new coat. Especially on the occasion of Lunar New Year, the bright yellow apricot blossoms, brilliant chrysanthemums, delicate ornamental bougainvillea, etc., decorate the space more cheerfully, full of spring colors. With its historical, cultural and scientific values, Go Thap relic site was recognized as a National Monument  by the Ministry of Culture and Information in 1989 and in 2012 was ranked by the Prime Minister as a special National Monument in the form of archaeological and architectural relics.

5.12 Pho Bang tourist area

Pho Bang tourist area is the resting place of Pho Bang Nguyen Sinh Sac. He was a patriotic Confucian scholar and the father of President Ho Chi Minh. After many renovations, the tomb has become a national historical and cultural relic complex. Many tourists when coming to Dong Thap do not forget to stop here to burn incense and visit the architecture here.

5.13 Vinh Trang Pagoda

Vinh Trang Pagoda is known for its ancient architecture built in the early 19th century. It has a fusion of Asian and European styles and is the largest pagoda in Dong Thap.
In particular, the pagoda has more than 60 precious Buddha statues placed inside the main halls. However, the most prominent are the giant statues of Sakyamuni, Amitabha Buddha and Maitreya Buddha located outside the campus.

5.16 Cai Be Floating Market

 When coming to Dong Thap, you should not miss the famous “tourist specialty” Cai Be floating market, which attracts many tourists. Cai Be floating market operates from early morning, before dawn, until late at night. Therefore, you can visit the market at any time.

5.20 My Thuan Bridge 

My Thuan Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge and the first bridge across the Mekong River in Vietnam, connecting the two banks of Vinh Long and Dong Thap. The bridge was built with the support of the Australian government.

5.21 Man Dinh Hong Flower Garden

5.22 Cai Be Church

Cai Be Church is located in a prominent location in Cai Be town, next to the Tien River. It was built in 1929 in the ancient Roman architectural style with very sophisticated carved lines.

In particular, the towering bell tower, standing out in the sky of the church, is a feature that helps people from other places easily recognize Cai Be town. In addition to being a place of religious value, the church attracts many tourists to visit and take pictures.

5.23 My Tho Cathedral

My Tho Cathedral is splendidly designed in the architectural style with typical Greek and Roman styles.

5.24 Chanh Giac Truc Lam Zen Monastery

5.27 Le Quang Xoat Ancient House

This is the private residence of Mr. Le Quang Xoat, a descendant of a wealthy family. It was famous in the region in the early 20th century with an area of up to 700m². 5.30 Royal Tomb

Royal Tomb is a mausoleum that clearly reflects the burial culture as well as the unique architectural art knowledge of the Nguyen Dynasty. 5.31 Dinh Doc Phu Hai

Dinh Doc Phu Hai is also known by another name, Doc Phu Hai House. Because this used to be the residence of Doc Phu Su Nguyen Van Hai during the Nguyen Dynasty. 6. Specialties when traveling to Dong Thap

6.1 Sa Dec noodles 

It would be a waste to come to Dong Thap without enjoying Sa Dec noodles. The noodles are soft but not too tough, the broth is fragrant and sweet with minced meat, heart, liver, golden sausage, … On top are a little onion, a little pepper, with lemon, chili and vegetables. All of these ingredients when mixed together create an irresistible delicious dish.

6.4 Linh fish hotpot with dien dien flowers

6.5 Snails hanging on the kitchen rack

Snails hanging on the kitchen rack are considered a famous specialty in Dong Thap. People will choose really big and round lac snails because these snails will have more chewiness and sweetness.
