Tien Ong Cave

Not only a cave with natural wonders like other caves on the bay. But Tien Ong cave is also a living witness to an ancient Vietnamese culture in Ha Long. This place has an archaeological display area of prehistoric relics, proving that life existed in the sea thousands of years ago.

How Tien Ong Cave is unique?

Located on Cai Tai rocky island, in a series of limestone islands in the south of Ha Long Bay, far from the city. Ha Long about 20 km to the south, about 5-7 km from Cat Ba island (Hai Phong) to the east. Tien Ong cave is one of the beautiful caves in Ha Long Bay – a UNESCO world heritage site, the symbol of Vietnam tourism.

However, Tien Ong cave was put into operation for tourism quite late. This is not only a cave with pure natural beauty. But it is also one of the rare caves in HaLong Bay that has traces of human residence since ancient times.

Top things to do

In 2017, Ha Long Bay Management Board cooperated with Quang Ninh Museum, Vietnam Archeology Institute to build an archaeological display model at Tien Ong cave. This is considered as an on-site museum that helps visitors not only admire the beauty of nature but also know a culture that existed in Ha Long Bay thousands of years ago.

Tien Ong cave geological structure is divided into 6 main compartments, but this division of 6 compartments is only valid for geology. But for visitors, it is still divided into 2 main parts visually for easy distinction.

If most of the caves on Ha Long Bay have a common feature of the moderate mouth, or when entering the cave, the cave is very wide, Tien Ong cave has almost the opposite structure. The mouth of the cave is very wide (70m), like a “frog jaw”, the cave floor is about 5m high from today’s sea surface. Outside the cave, there are many falling stalactites – traces of natural geology. The cave slopes gradually inwards, about 50m deep. According to the survey of Ha Long Bay Management Board.

Tien Ong cave is estimated to be more than 1,000m2 wide. In the middle of the cave, the bamboo shoots, stalactites drop from above and even grow from the bottom up like a screen, dividing the cave into two compartments. In the inner compartment, there is a stalactite block, which looks almost like a Buddha image, fishermen call it Tien Ong cave.

Because the cave’s surface is facing to the southeast, many stalactites are falling in front of the cave. So the air in the cave is always airy, cool in summer and winter, which can significantly avoid cold winds.

On the sprawling floor of rocks with incomplete shapes. These are the rocks that collapsed from the cave ceiling during the geological shock of this place.

The bizarre limestone blocks, stalagmites are the result of the process of cracking geological faults over millions of years that continues today.

How to get there?

Tien Ong Cave is about 18 km from Tuan Chau Port, equivalent to about 2 hours travelling by boat.

This is a site on route 3, so you can come here by purchasing tickets to route 3 and renting a sightseeing cruise. Outside of this place, you will be able to visit other spots on line 3 such as Ho Ba Ham; Cua Van fishing village; The Angels …

However, there are usually very few cruise ships on this line 3, or arguably none. And this line 3 is mostly new overnight cruises, usually 2-day 1-night tours. or 3 days and 2 nights.

There is another way that you arrange to buy tickets on route 3 and rent a cruise for the day to run on your own accord. However, this way is only suitable for groups of 20 or more to reduce costs and rent. Minimum ships are about 4 million or more depending on the peak season and quality of the cruise.

What to eat?

In terms of cuisine, there are many high-end to low-end restaurants for you to choose from when coming to Ha Long. Typical examples are Mithrin restaurant (Hung Thang, Bai Chay); Restaurant Panorama (168 Ha Long, Bai Chay); Son Ca restaurant (98 Ben Tau); Bien Xanh restaurant (08 Le Thanh Tong); Hai Ninh restaurant (zone 3, Vuon Dao); Thien Ly restaurant (Ly Thuong Kiet, Cua Ong) … If you want to enjoy the specialties of Ha Long sea, you can go to Sea Food Restaurant (Ha Long Street); Thu Huong restaurant (Ha Long street); Noi Nho restaurant (Tran Hung Dao street) …
