5. History Of Ham Rong Bridge
Ham Rong Bridge was started by the French in 1901. In 1905, the bridge was officially put into use and was considered the most modern bridge in Indochina at that time. Initially, the bridge was 9m wide, designed in the shape of a dome, the northern end of the bridge was Ngoc Mountain, the southern end was Rong Mountain.
The bridge was destroyed in 1946 and restored in 1962. At this time, Soviet and Chinese experts came to Vietnam to help build the bridge. Ham Rong Bridge was widened by 17m, including 2 steel girder spans. The bridge structure includes a railway in the middle, and roads for cars, small vehicles and pedestrians on both sides. The bridge was officially inaugurated on May 19, 1964, on the occasion of President Ho Chi Minh’s 74th birthday.
During the escalating war against North Vietnam, Ham Rong Bridge became the focus of evaluation by the US Air Force. After 69 days and nights of construction, the bridge was opened to traffic on May 19, 1973. Today, besides Hoang Long Bridge and Nguyet Vien Bridge, the historic Ham Rong Bridge also contributes greatly to the construction and development of Thanh Hoa City’s infrastructure.

In the face of large-scale destruction by the enemy, the army and people of Thanh Hoa still fought back steadfastly. Also on April 3 and 4, 1965, the army and people of Thanh Hoa shot down 47 enemy planes, setting a record for the first American plane shot down in Northern Vietnam.
